Saturation Diving Class & Role Tier List

Compare Captain, Engineer, Spotter, and Salvager for solo, duo, and four-player Saturation Diving teams.

What is the best class in Saturation Diving?

Engineer is the most forgiving all-purpose class, but there is no universal best role. Captain gains value with coordinated teammates, Spotter prevents avoidable encounters, and Salvager improves the resource return from a safe route. For a four-player team, one of each role produces the clearest division of responsibility.

This tier list rates decision value rather than hidden numerical stats. Use it to choose a job before the dive, then adjust for the map, team size, equipment, and current balance patch.

RoleSoloDuoFour-player crewPrimary value
EngineerSSSRepairs, valves, decompression systems, emergency recovery
SpotterASSSonar checks, threat warnings, route information
SalvagerAASOre efficiency, carry planning, extraction value
CaptainBASNavigation, assignments, retreat calls, team tempo

Which class should a solo player choose?

Choose Engineer when survival and recovery matter more than perfect resource income. A solo diver has no teammate to repair a failed system, watch a valve, or stabilize the route while someone else handles the objective. Engineer therefore covers the widest set of emergencies when every task belongs to one player.

Spotter is the alternative for players who consistently lose runs to late threat detection. Salvager is suitable when the route is already familiar and the goal is efficient mining. Captain offers less solo value because communication and task assignment are its main strengths.

Before leaving, use the getting started guide and verified upgrades guide to turn the class choice into a workable route.

What are the best two-player combinations?

A strong duo pairs one stability role with one information or income role. The first player keeps the dive recoverable; the second reduces uncertainty or increases the reward. Two players should avoid duplicating the same job unless the route has a specific reason to demand it.

DuoRatingWhy it worksMain weakness
Engineer + SpotterSRecovery plus early threat informationSlower ore-focused runs
Captain + EngineerSClear calls with strong emergency coverageCaptain must actively communicate
Engineer + SalvagerASafe extraction with better resource returnLess warning against roaming threats
Spotter + SalvagerAFast scouting and collectionMechanical failures are harder to recover
Captain + SpotterAStrong route control and informationLimited repair specialization

What is the best four-player team?

Run Captain, Engineer, Spotter, and Salvager together. The Captain owns the route and stop conditions, the Engineer owns systems and recovery, the Spotter owns threat information, and the Salvager owns collection priority. Clear ownership prevents four players from reacting to the same problem while another critical task is ignored.

  1. Spotter reports the threat, direction, and safe lane.
  2. Captain chooses advance, hold, or retreat.
  3. Engineer confirms whether systems and pressure allow that choice.
  4. Salvager drops low-value objectives and protects the extraction path.

How should each role spend upgrades?

Buy for the job that most often ends your runs, then improve speed or profit. A Captain benefits from route endurance, an Engineer from reliability, a Spotter from reconnaissance uptime, and a Salvager from mining and carrying efficiency. Avoid copying a single build across all four jobs.

Use the progression guide to prepare upgrades. Dedicated Captain, Engineer, Spotter, and Salvager pages join this series during Week 2.

When should this tier list change?

Re-rank the roles whenever a patch changes class abilities, oxygen use, pressure recovery, mining efficiency, or crew size. A tier list is a snapshot of responsibilities, not a permanent truth. If a role gains a new repair, reconnaissance, or extraction tool, its value can change differently in solo, duo, and full-crew play.
